Piet Mondrian: Primary Colors and Shapes

This is a great project from kinderart.com to teach primary colors and shapes.

Go to Mondrian Style Painting for full instructions.

For younger grades, I precut thin, black strips of paper, and red, yellow and blue rectangles or squares.  They could then glue them on white paper.  Older children could use a ruler and mark the black lines themselves (you could even add some math concepts), and either paint or color in the shapes as they choose.

Example of finished project.

We don't have any Mondrian prints in the Grovecrest Library collection, so be sure to print off your own pictures of Mondrian paintings to show your class, or check the local library.

For more ideas on Mondrian try: Art Smarts 4 Kids, or Marking Art Fun.
